Columbia Gorge
We cycled up this road, completed in 1922, multiple times just for the thrill of the coast down. Because this old road, one of the first roads to be paved in the area, was built for the Model T's of the era the gradients were kept to 5% or less with all the curves a 100 ft radius or more so the cars could keep their speed up on them. The I-84 is now the main road from Portland into the interior of Oregon along the Columbia Gorge and so this old road is now the road less traveled making it perfect for cycling, with some parts now just for pedestrians and cyclists. By next year the whole route from Portland to The Dalles will be finished using the old road and in areas where it was paved over by the building of the I-84 paved trails that are elevated and/or beside the Interstate.
